Background of the Study

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented strain on healthcare systems worldwide, especially in regions with limited resources. Borno State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has faced significant challenges in managing COVID-19 patients, compounded by the ongoing conflict in the region. Critical care nurses play an essential role in managing severe COVID-19 cases, often in difficult and resource-constrained environments. This study will assess the challenges faced by critical care nurses in Borno State healthcare facilities in managing COVID-19 patients, including issues related to personal protective equipment (PPE), training, and support.

Statement of the Problem

Critical care nurses in Borno State are at the forefront of the battle against COVID-19, yet many face significant challenges due to the lack of resources, proper training, and support systems. These challenges can lead to increased exposure to the virus, burnout, and reduced quality of care for patients. Understanding these challenges and identifying solutions is essential to improving COVID-19 care in the region and preparing for future healthcare crises.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the challenges faced by critical care nurses in managing COVID-19 patients in Borno State healthcare facilities.

  2. To evaluate the impact of these challenges on the quality of care provided to COVID-19 patients.

  3. To explore strategies for overcoming these challenges and improving the care of COVID-19 patients.

Research Questions

  1. What challenges do critical care nurses in Borno State face in managing COVID-19 patients?

  2. How do these challenges affect the quality of care provided to COVID-19 patients?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to address these challenges and improve patient outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Critical care nurses in Borno State face significant challenges in managing COVID-19 patients, including lack of resources and training.

  2. These challenges negatively affect the quality of care provided to COVID-19 patients in Borno State healthcare facilities.

  3. Implementing strategies such as improved training, better PPE provision, and mental health support will enhance the ability of nurses to manage COVID-19 patients effectively.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on critical care nurses in healthcare facilities in Borno State. Limitations include the difficult access to healthcare facilities in conflict zones and potential variation in the level of support provided across different facilities.

Definitions of Terms
